Is this the time for blogs again?

A report had said that facebook has been loosing millions of its members recently. The main reason that the existing facebook account holders are deleting their accounts could be due to 'facebook fatigue'. Nowadays every youngsters including me have the habbit of logging in facebook at first even before checking their mails or other necessaries. This frequent use of facebook might have created fatigue among users. Even me, thinking of deleting my facebook acccount as I feel that I am spending too much time in facebook. I have seen my friend deleting their facebook account simply due to the reason that they did not like that. But within few days after deleting, they were back again with a new account. Such is the power of facebook that it grabs users from all over world.

Facebook has been a leading social networking site since it was launched in 2004. Eventhough there is only increasing number of facebook members, recent reports are saying that the increase rate has reduced, and also raises a doubt whether it is due to fatigue. But having said about my friend, if fatigue is the only reason, then it is not going to bother Zuckerberg more, since there is possibility that the lost members may join Facebook again after sometime. But there can also be another reason..perhaps funny.. why dont the decrease rate be due to unavailablity of eligible people(excluding newly born child) across the world..? What I see among the people in my society is that the apetite for facebook is only increasing among people such that my uncle who is above 40 years of age is looking to create a facebook account.! And also my friends who were deleting their account due to facebook fatigue were not in facebook wilderness for long. They joined again.

So, whatever the reason may be, if the reason is due to the fatigue, then its going to be a lucrative business for blogging websites and blog advertisement providing websites as the other way of sharing informations is through blog. Blog, which was a popular way to share informations earlier has the right chance of coming back.

But having said all these I also have to admit the Facebook's response which I saw only after I typed this post. Facebook has completely denied that it is losing its users. They said that they are infact pleased with the performance of Facebook over the years.

Tamilnadu election results tomorrow

Not only me waiting for this election result, entire Tamilnadu is waiting for this result. Its because that the two fronts headed by DMK and ADMK are having equal chances of winning this election. I think it was DMK that had a bright chance of winning this election earlier . Thanks for the 2g scam that dimnished DMK chances and gave us such an interesting election! ;) . After the 2g scam was brought to light, ADMK looked favourites for winning this election before Jayalalitha herself damaging her image by final confusions in seat allotments to its allies. If these two incidents were not enough, there was an another one came from Vijayakanth's side. He was caught in multiple controversies during his poll campaign which was exaggerated by Sun, Kalaignar and Makkal tv. I hereby warn my readers to stay at home tomorrow as there is a possibility of outrage by loosing political party.

Thing to watch after election...

Road expansion in my village

Well,this picture doesnt make sense for u guys on first sight. This is the road in my village which is now being expanded.

these points are worth of saying about this expansion work...

1. This road Kottamedu-Guduvancherry (18km) is going to be expanded by about 1 meter.

2.Forest areas on the either side of the road is going to reduce one meter in width.

3. Deer,Peacocks,Monkeys etc., are going to lose their residence by 1 meter.

Eventhough all means the same, it differs from different perspective. As a person in this village, i have mixed feelings. I don't know whether to be happy about this road expansion which i often use or to feel sad that these forest areas are being destructed. This 1 meter doesnt sounds much. isnt it?.. Look this way. Lets take it approximately 1.5 meter. 1.5x18000(18km)=27000 which is 27 square kilometer. So 27 sq kilometer forest area is destroyed. Anyway with this growing population, these things continue to happen and we cant really do anything with this growing population. What i need to insist you guys is that please try to grow plants in your home and let green population increase in tandem with human population in an attempt to save plants atleast if we cant save animals.

Any one who were watching cricket for the first time yesterday, i am sure they might have turned into a cricket mad. Yes guys it was a perfect advertisement for a one day cricket. The match between India vs South africa yesterday contained everything required for a perfect one day match. As i am a Indian, it would be better if India had won that match. India were at the top of the game all through the match except the last over which changed the result in a flash. Also the way Viru and Sachin started the match, i thought that India could win the match very easily. But having seen the complete match, i can now understand what all my friends say .. " Cricket is game of uncertainty"... Also i can understand that, like cricket, cricket fans are also uncertain. Because all my friends who where praising Indian team from the start of the game till 40th over, have suddenly started to reprimand them. why not even me..

The land of the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan has now turned into a tiger den. Camera traps have revealed pictures of 19 tigers on the prowl in the Savannah-like forests of Sathyamangalam in Erode district in western Tamil Nadu. And DNA analysis of scats has confirmed the presence of at least 13 big cats.

The booming tiger population in Sathyamangalam, even while the big cats are on a decline in North India, has prompted Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh to ask Tamil Nadu government to send a proposal for declaring the Sathyamangalam forests a tiger reserve. As of now, only a small part of the Sathyamangalam forests has been declared a wildlife sanctuary. And the sprawling 1,450 sqkm area is the only non-tiger reserve forest in south India with a significant presence of big cats, say wildlife experts.

When a TOI team trekked through Sultan road in Thalamalai forest area, clear tiger pug marks and a fresh kill of a cow could be spotted. The locals in Asanur, Bavanisagar and Thalamalai say they spot at least one tiger a week. And for the Tamil Nadu forest department, a promising tale of tiger conservation is rolling out of Sathyamangalam.

"A healthy prey base, our strict vigil in forests, conservation efforts and reduction of cattle population in the forest fringes have yielded positive results in Sathyamangalam," chief wildlife warden R Sundararaju told TOI.

The big cats have been spotted sporadically across the five forest ranges of the Sathyamangalam forest division after the killing of Veerappan in November 2004. The wildlife census team found pug marks of eight to 10 tigers in Sathyamangalam last year. However, for the first time, a scientific study of the tiger presence was carried out by the Wildlife Fund for Nature and the Wildlife Trust of India according to the guidelines laid down by the environment and forest ministry.

The cameras, placed at 30 places across Moyar valley in the Sathyamangalam forest division at an interval of two sq km, have captured footages of 19 different tigers.

Besides, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) collected 109 scat samples of which 60 turned out to be tiger stools. "The DNA analysis of the scat samples has shown that they belong to 13 different tigers," says WTI's field officer, Dr B Ramakrishnan. However, the forest officials now fear that the presence of the big cats may attract poachers to the forests.

Number of tigers doubled in Kalakkad tiger reserve!

The tiger population has doubled in Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve here compared to the number of wild cats found in the park four years ago.

As per the census carried out in February this year, there were 13 tigers in the KMTR compared to six recorded in 2006. The census showed that there were 3 males, seven females and three cubs at present.

There were also 62 panthers, 23 elephants, 100 migratory birds, 23 squirrels, 65 dotted deer, 69 bisons, 17 lion tailed macaques and 17 langurs in the reserve, KMTR Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forests H Mallesappa told reporters here yesterday.

This time forest department has used camera trap by deploying a total of 40 cameras throughout the KTMR, he said.

The Centre has allocated Rs. 1.94 crore this year for holistic development of KMTR, considered one of the delicate ecological bio-spheres in the Western Ghat range.

Utilising the fund, various measures, including setting up of anti-poaching squads, providing compensation to farmers for crop damage caused by wild animals in fringe areas of the reserve, had been taken up this year, he said.

Laying of proper roads and construction of bridges along this ecological bio—sphere, demarcating the protected reserve forests by powered fencing to prevent entry of wild animals into the farm lands were among other steps taken this year.

The fund has been provided by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, he said.

KMTR is situated in the southern most tip of the Western Ghat range, spread across the intervening borders of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts adjoining Kerala.

A second opportunity came his way in Mohali and he has ensured himself a 320-run thrashing of Australia [Images]. And here we won't even mention his ODIs or T20 exploits. Don't agree with us. Here's a second point of view then.
He has given the term "leading from the front" a whole new meaning.
Captaincy at a young age can be a burden and can affect your performance as a player. Not in Dhoni's case though. He celebrated wearing the captain's armband for a second time by contributing 92 and 68 not out with the bat-- a performance that won him the man-of-the-match award.
Don't agree with us? Here's the third and final point of view.
The 27-year-old has his head firmly on his shoulder and has not let success distract him as is usually the case with the young Indian cricketers. Dhoni is aware of the fact that both "performance" and "luck" are variable factors and would pose a problem for him at some stage. And that is precisely what keeps him rooted.
Still, don't agree with us? Then just hear from the horse's mouth.
"When you play one or two matches, records do happen," said Dhoni, when queried about his second successive triumph as Test captain. "But it is about doing it over a longer period of time." The captain was in fact surprised that the Aussies succumbed so meekly.
"Honestly speaking, we have not seen this before," he admitted. "I mean in their first innings, they were 22 for two wickets after 13 overs and I was so surprised that I told Rahul (Dravid) that you don't see things like that very often
"And maybe you won't see that again for a long time." Dhoni did admit, however, that India was the better side.
"I don't believe in comparisons but we did most things right," he explained. "We had only four bowlers and to their credit, they shared the responsibility well." But doesn't his captaincy deserved some credit as well?
"There's not too much pressure of being a captain," admitted Dhoni. "We have to take care of certain things on the ground and channel our efforts in the right direction." And what about his own batting?
"It was a perfect scenario for me to just go out and play my natural game," reasoned Dhoni. "We got a good start, the track was placid and the ball old. It was just the perfect occasion for my sort of batting.
"I have realized that I should play my natural game, play to my strengths. In between, I was not playing my game but thinking of the scenario." Another thing he has realised happens to be the fact that the hallmark of a good captain is to have faith in his players.
"I believe in every guy who is part of the side," he asserted. "Every player comes to this level after putting in a lot of effort."
The Mohali Test was memorable on many grounds-- Sachin's record, Amit Mishra's performance on debut and his own batting. But what was it that Dhoni himself like the most?
"Sourav getting 102 was special," blurted Dhoni, without thinking even for a moment. "Since it is his last series, he was playing without any pressure. And that is how one wants to see him play."
With almost everything going to perfection he definitely has reasons to expect more. But Dhoni believes caution is the best way to propagate aggression.
"They are a strong side," he warned. "It is just that we are doing our job well now. So we don't have to worry about the opposition as much. But they will come back strong for sure."
Successful, and still not complacent, that's Mahendra Singh Dhoni for you. And now you better believe us.

Cricket Australia to review security situation in India

Cricket Australia (CA) has commissioned an urgent review of the security situation in India following the serial blasts in Delhi ahead of their tour next month.
Australia were due to depart Sep 21 for a four-Test series in India. The first Test is in Bangalore Oct 9 while Delhi will host the third Test starting Oct 29.
The Australian team's security expert Reg Dickason has been asked to compile the report in conjunction with CA and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA).
Dickason will work with ACA and CA General Manager of Cricket Michael Brown, who will speak to the Indian cricket board, the Australian high commission in New Delhi and security agencies to gain information.
"The fundamental principle that always comes first is the safety of the team and the team officials," CA spokesman Peter Young said. "We will seek advice from the Australian government.
"Based on this report and other inputs, we will take a decision on the tour next week or so," he said.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains hopeful that the tour will continue.
"The blasts are a concern, but I don't think it will have an impact on the Australian tour," BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.
Young said that so far there was no danger for the tour to be called off.
"Well, so far the tour is on unless we get any reports, we are progressing with our plans to go ahead. There's a standard process for every tour. Such is the way of the world these days that this process is completed before we go anywhere."
Australia expressed safety fears ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy tournament due to be held in Pakistan this month. The tournament was eventually postponed for a year after pressure from several nations including Australia, New Zealand and South Africa

Dhoni’s men deserving winners

Mahendra Singh Dhoni keeps adding feathers to his cap.
First, it was the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa. This was followed by the notable triumph in the CB Series in Australia. And now comes the latest – an ODI series victory in Sri Lanka for the first time. Knowing how difficult it is to beat Sri Lanka in their own backyard, it must rank as a creditable feat.
Going by past record and present form few would have given the Indians any chance of winning the ODI series.
They had lost the Test series, the Mendis factor was still a perplexing one and it was a young side with two debutants that was taking on a largely experienced outfit playing in all-too-familiar surroundings. Moreover, in bilateral contests between the two teams in Sri Lanka, the home team had yet to be beaten in contests dating back to 1985.
Things seemed to be moving very much according to the script when Sri Lanka wrapped up the first match by eight wickets.
But then came a spirited comeback and by winning three games on the trot, the Indians emerged deserving, if unexpected, winners.
It must not be forgotten that the tourists were without Virender Sehwag for the entire series. His absence meant that the start was always going to be shaky with there being only one recognised opening batsman in Gautam Gambhir.
In the second match, with Gambhir too out with a stiff neck, we had the unusual sight of the innings being opened by Virat Kohli and Irfan Pathan.
Kohli is essentially a No 4 batsman and it is to his credit that by the fourth match he had settled down in his enforced position and made a spirited half century full of strokes all round the wicket.
His was an inspired selection and Dilip Vengsarkar and his team deserve to be congratulated for giving the 19-year-old gifted batsman the break at the right time.
Once Sehwag and Gambhir take their usual places at the top, Kohli will be a key figure in the middle order. The other debutant Subramaniam Badrinath impressed in his maiden ODI. Coming in at a tense situation at 75 for five with a modest victory target of 143 suddenly looking like Mission Impossible, he helped Dhoni add 60 runs for the sixth wicket and was there at the end with an unbeaten 27 that earned him plaudits aplenty most of all for his unflappable temperament.
He certainly is another candidate for the middle order in future and it is good to see so many talented youngsters making a strong bid for places in the batting order.
In fact, if anything, the series has virtually confirmed that the days of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the limited-overs side are over and Sachin Tendulkar himself will be under pressure to retain his place with Suresh Raina having made the most of the opportunity that the series gave him.
The one batting problem lay with Yuvraj Singh who just could not get going. But of course he is too good a player to be discarded and deserves to be given a wider berth. Rohit Sharma, however, will have to do much better if he is to retain his place in the squad particularly with other youngsters waiting in the queue.
The bowling supposedly the weak link proved in fact to be the strong link. This was underlined by the fact that Sri Lanka were dismissed in successive matches for scores as low as 142, 204 and 212.
Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh rose to their responsibilities commendably, but it was Munaf Patel who emerged the surprise packet. Displaying pace, hostility and deceptiveness, he troubled the Lankan batsmen no end.
Praveen Kumar too performed admirably but it was sad to see Pathan being a shadow of the match-winning all rounder he was not too long ago.
It was also good to see the Indian think-tank revert to the seven batsmen, four bowlers policy in the third and fourth ODIs. I have always held the view that save under certain circumstances this is the way the Indians should approach ODIs, and given the additional responsibility of bowling a few overs, Yuvraj Singh and even Rohit Sharma rose to the occasion. An extra batsman is an insurance against a top-order collapse and India benefited from this policy in both the third and fourth ODIs.

Nash can't live down Garry Sobers' six sixes

It has been 40 years when Garry Sobers whacked Englishman Malcolm Nash for six sixes in an over but Nash says he is still being asked about the six balls he bowled that day at the St Helen's Ground in Swansea.
"I reckon I get asked about it if not once a week then at least once a month," Nash was quoted as saying in Daily Telegraph on Sunday, the anniversary of the feat. "It is never, ever far away or out of the limelight.
"I was just part of history and there was nothing I could do. It was just one over in my life. Would I take it back? Never. I just wish I got paid for it. It would have made me rich."
Nash, 63 shifted base to San Francisco in 1998 but is still widely known as Sobers' victim . However unfairly, given the fact he in 1968 he was barely two years into his Glamorgan career and from thereon he went on to take 993 first-class wickets. Nash was also an integral member of Glamorgan's championship-winning side the next year
He now works for Vespro Inc, a firm that recycles plastic products, in marketing and sales.
"It feels like it was two days ago, because it is talked about over and over again," he said.. "I was bowling orthodox slow left- arm spin, which I didn't do all that often. The first computer was conceptualized by a 19th century British mathematician named Charles Babbage -- creator of the speedometer -- whose Analytical Engine, a programmable logic center with memory, was never built even though Babbage worked on it for 40 years. During World War II, the British built Colossus I, a computer designed to break Nazi military codes, while at Harvard, IBM's Mark I computer was assembled. In 1946, ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator), was put to work at the University of Pennsylvania. Designed to perform artillery firing calculations, ENIAC was America's first digital electronic computer. Unlike the Mark I, which used electromechanical relays, ENIAC used vacuum tubes -- 18,000 of them, in fact -- and was much faster. The Mark I, Colossus and ENIAC used the binary system, which reduced the counting process to two digits, 0 and 1. This was compatible with the basis of computer operation, combinations of on-off (yes-no) switches called logic gates that responded to electrical charges and produced information called bits. (A cluster of eight bits was called a byte.) In 1947, Bell Labs invented the transistor, which replaced the vacuum tube as a faster, smaller conduit of electrical current, and a few years later the Labs produced Leprechaun, the world's first fully transistorized computer. One of the transistor's inventors, William Shockley, left Bell Labs and started his own firm in Palo Alto, California -- the center of an area that would soon be known as Silicon Valley. Shockley (among others) discovered that any number of interconnected transistors or circuits could be placed on a microchip of silicon. One drawback of the microchip -- that it was "hard-wired" and thus could perform only the duties for which it was designed -- was resolved by Intel Corporation's invention of the microprocessor. The microprocessor could program a single chip to perform a variety of tasks. These technological advances made computers smaller, faster and more affordable, paving the way for the advent of the personal computer.
The first personal computer was the Altair 8800, which briefly appeared on the scene in 1975. Two years later, the Apple II was unveiled. According to Time, it was "the machine that made the revolution," and was the offspring of Steven Jobs and Steven Wozniak. The latter was Apple's star designer, while Jobs used uncanny marketing skills to build Apple into a highly profitable concern with stock worth $1.7 billion by 1983. The personal computer did not long remain the private domain of Apple and one or two other upstart companies. In 1981, IBM introduced its PC, having previously focused its efforts on manufacturing mainframe business computers. Incorporating the Intel microprocessor, the IBM PC set the standard for quality. That same year, Adam Osborne, a Bangkok-born British columnist, introduced a 24-pound portable computer with detachable keyboard, 64K of memory and a diminutive five-inch screen, which retailed for $1,795. The progenitor of the laptop, the Osborne I was so successful that a host of imitators quickly followed. Even more compact than the Osborne, Clive Sinclair's 12-ounce ZX80, marketed in 1980 (as the Timex Sinclair 1000 in the U.S.) introduced many people to the possibilities of computers, in spite of its limitations, thanks to a $99 list price. One of the most popular and least expensive personal computers of the early Eighties was the $595 Commodore 64.
Concerned were expressed about the consequences of the computer revolution. One argument was that computers would widen the gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots," as it seemed that only those with good educations and lots of discretionary income could afford to plug into the "information network" as represented, early in the decade, by nearly 1,500 databases like Source, a Reader's Digest subsidiary, a legal database called Westlaw, and the American Medical Association's AMA/NET. Others worried that people would come to rely too much on computers to do what they had once done in their own heads, namely to remember and analyze, therefore making a lot of learning unnecessary. Still others feared that the computer revolution would result in an increasingly isolated populace; when people worked at home, networking with their company via computer, they would lose the personal contact that made the workplace an essential element in the social fabric of the community. There was fear, as well, that the computerization of industry would cost workers their jobs. Futurists like Alvin Toppler, author of the 1980 bestseller The Third Wave, envisioned a not-too-distant future when an entire family would learn, work and play around an "electronic hearth" -- the computer -- at home.
Proponents countered that the computer would prove to be a tremendous boon to humanity. The salutary effect of computers in the field of medicine was considerable, providing more precise measurements and monitoring in such procedures as surgical anethesia, blood testing and intravenous injections. Computers promised widened employment horizons for 10 million physically handicapped Americans, many of whom were unable to commute back and forth to work. And a majority of Americans believed computers were an excellent educational tool. A 1982 Yankelovich poll showed Americans were generally sanguine about the dawning Computer Age; 68 percent thought computers would improve their childrens' education, 80 percent expected computers to become as commonplace as televisions in the home, and 67 percent believed they would raise living standards through enhanced productivity. As a consequence, 2.8 million computers were sold in the U.S. in 1982, up from 1.4 million in 1981, which was in turn double the number sold in 1980. In 1982, 100 companies shared the $5 billion in sales, with Texas Instruments, Apple, IBM, Commodore, Timex and Atari the frontrunners in the personal computer market. And by 1982 there were more than 100,000 computers in the nation's public schools. Educators were delighted to report that students exposed to computers studied more and were more proficient in problem solving. Kids joined computer clubs and attended summer computer camps. In lieu of naming a "Man of the Year" for 1982, Time named the computer the "Machine of the Year."
By mid-decade the computer craze was at full throttle. On Wall Street, 36 computer-related companies had gone public with $798 million worth of stock. By 1984 retail sales of personal computers and software had reached $15 billion. A flurry of entrepreneurship in the so-called computer "aftermarket" produced $1.4 billion in sales of such commodities as computer training and tutoring services, specialty furniture, and publishing. In the latter field there were 4,200 books on personal computing in print (compared to only 500 in 1980), as well as 300 magazines, including Byte and Popular Computing. In addition, thousands of software developers competed fiercely for their share of sales that exceeded $2 billion annually by 1984. Another $11 billion was made leasing mainframe software to banks, airlines and the government. The biggest software manufacturer was Microsoft, with 1984 revenues of about $100 million. Systems software, like Microsoft's MS-DOS and AT&T's UNIX instructed the various elements of a computer system to work in unison. Another popular software program was Lotus 1-2-3, a spreadsheet plus electronic filing system popular in the business market. Software quality ranged from outstanding to awful, as did prices. And software errors delated the release of Apple's Macintosh computer by two years. Software pirating became a big business, as well. It was estimated that as many as 20 pirated copies of a program were peddled for every one legitimate purchase.
The public sector embraced the revolution. The Grace Commission -- the presidential review of waste in government -- criticized what it saw as a failure to seize the opportunities presented by the new technologies, and was followed by a five-year plan, launched in 1983, to increase government computer expenditures. The goal, according to one General Services Administration official, was to put "a million computers in the hands of managers as well as those who need them daily for such things as air traffic control, customs, passports and Social Security." The White House itself became computerized, with 150 terminals linked to a powerful central system. Cabinet members like Treasury Secretary Donald Regan carried desktop units with them everywhere. An email network linked the administration with 22 federal agencies. The Library of Congress began copying its more valuable collections onto digital-optical disks for public retrieval. The National Library of Medicine at Bethesda, Maryland stored electronic copies of five million medical books and articles in a single database. In 1984 the Internal Revenue Service began using optical scanners to process 18 million 1040EZ tax forms into a computer system. And the FBI's Organized Crime Information System, a $7 million computer, began compiling data on thousands of criminals and suspects.
By 1988, computer viruses had become a major concern. In that year alone, over 250,000 computers were infected in a nine-month period, raising grave doubts about the vulnerability of data systems. In September of that year the first computer virus criminal trial was conducted in Fort Worth, Texas. The plaintiff, a disgruntled ex-employee, was accused of infecting his former company's computer with a virus that deleted 168,000 sales commission records. Like their biological counterparts, such viruses were designed to reproduce perfect replicas of themselves to infect software that came into contact with the host computer. And there was no telling where a virus would strike. One virus, produced by the owners of a computer store in Lahore, Pakistan, managed to infect 10,000 IBM PC disks at George Washington University in the U.S. The SCORES virus spread from a Dallas-based computer services company to Boeing, NASA, the IRS and the House of Representatives. There was concern that one day a "killer virus" would find its way int the nation's electronic funds-transfer system, crash the stock exchange computer centers, or scramble air-traffic control systems. In response, 48 states quickly passed computer mischief laws, while companies and computer users scrambled to create antiviral programs.
Clearly, the computer revolution of the 1980s opened up a new frontier, one that Americans, true to their pioneer traditions, were eager to explore. Unanticipated perils lay in wait, but the possibilities in terms of enhancing our lives were limitless.
Supercomputers
As the end of the decade approached, supercomputers -- costing between $5 million and $25 million each -- were being used to locate new oil deposits, create spectacular Hollywood special effects, and design new military weapons, not to mention artificial limbs, jet engines, and a host of other products for private industry. These machines were able to crunch data at a speed measured in gigaFLOPS -- billions of operations per second. In size, most were no larger than a hot tub. The National Science Foundation established five supercomputer centers which by 1988 were linked to 200 universities and research labs. The Los Alamos National Laboratory utilized eleven supercomputers. In 1988, IBM financed a machine incorporating parallel-processing, the use of 64 processors in tandem, which would make it 100 times faster than supercomputers then in use. At the same time, IBM was working on the TF-1, consisting of 33,000 high-speed processing units -- a computer that would be 20,000 times faster than anything on the market.

Indian one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has knocked his South African counterpart Graeme Smith off top spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen after a good series against Sri Lanka which concluded in Colombo on Friday.
According to an ICC media release here, the 27-year-old from Jharkhand was the leading run scorer in the five-match series against Sri Lanka with 193 runs and this made sure his side clinched its first-ever ODI series in Sri Lanka and in the process displaced Smith at the top of the rankings.
honi, who won the player-of-the-series award, was on top of the batting list for a week in April 2006 and is the first Indian batsman to head the batting chart since Sachin Tendulkar following the tri-series in Australia in March earlier this year.
Tendulkar, however, has dropped three places to ninth in the latest rankings after missing the series in Sri Lanka because of elbow injury. A player loses one per cent of his rating for missing every match.
Yuvraj Singh is the third Indian batsmen in the top 20, but the left-hander has dropped three places after scoring just 72 runs in the series and shares 18th position with England's Ian Bell who has jumped seven places after a series of good performances in the first three ODIs against South Africa so far.
Besides Dhoni, Suresh Raina is the only other India batsman to improve his batting ranking. The 21-year-old left-handed batsman scored 157 runs in the series and was rewarded by rising 18 places to 35th position.

India slips to fifth place in ICC cricket rankings:

Despite their historic 3-2 series-win against Sri Lanka, India has dropped to fifth place in the ICC ODI Championship table, released on Saturday.
England replaced India at the fourth place and has second position within touching distance after winning three consecutive matches against South Africa in the home series.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side had started in fourth place on 112 ratings points and finished the series in fifth place at 113.

India's defeat by 112 runs by the Duckworth-Lewis Method in the fifth and final ODI however did not cost it any place after England comfortably won its third match of the five-match series by 126 runs at The Oval.
Had India won the series 4-1, it would have risen to 115 ratings points as compared to Sri Lanka's 104.
If England manages to complete a series sweep against South Africa, it would jump to second place on 118 ratings points while South Africa would be on equal points with New Zealand but behind the Black Caps when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.
If England wins the series 4-1 it will sit just behind India by a fraction of a point. In that case, South Africa will retain second place on the table but will have slipped to 119 points after starting the series on 128.

'Modern gear makes Mendis difficult to crack'

The state-of-the-art cricketing equipment make it difficult to crack an already cryptic bowling action of spinner Ajantha Mendis, feels a sports expert.
"Modern gears utilised in cricket today perhaps insulates the feeling from the ball as it comes to the bat," said former Sri Lankan cricketer and sports expert Ranil Abeynaike said.
"Batsmen a few years ago could have read Mendis better if he had been bowling at that time," he added.
However, he feels Indian batsmen can crack him if they watch every ball of his. "The Indian batsmen will have to play according to each ball of Mendis and would have to observe him while taking him on. Every bowler has some distinct pattern of bowling either through his shoulder movement or hand action and that is what could be central to tackle Mendis," he said.
Asked if the Indians should opt for swatting the spinner who has several varieties in his arsenal, Abeynaike felt it would not be the proper method of tackling him.
Yuvraj Singh, who perhaps opted for a similar strategy, managed to hit the Sri Lankan lethal spinner for a six but fell in the next ball in the series opener Monday as Mendis beguiled him with a beauty that hit his stump.
Abeynaike said till the time the Indian batsmen came to terms with gauging Mendis, they should try to play him off and concentrate on other bowlers to add to the score board.
Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is of the view that the key to handle the mystery bowler effectively lies in playing against him on consistent basis.
Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has also admitted it was not easy to play Mendis. "I still have problems facing him," he said.

India's Jitender Kumar lost to Russian pugilist Georgy Balakshin in the 51kg flyweight category in the Olympics boxing competition on Wednesday.
After falling behind 2-1 in the opening round, Jitender came back well in the second to end even on points (5-5). But the Russian pulled clear in the third, taking a 13-8 lead. Though Jitender made a good comeback in the fourth, but the Russian eventually won 15-11.
The Asian Championship bronze medallist had defeated Uzbek rival Tulashboy Doniyorov by 13-6 in the pre-quarter-finals on Saturday.
Earlier, Jitender, making his Olympic debut, had pummelled his Turkish opponent Ulas Furkan Memis in less than three rounds in the opening round.

One can't quite say that this day belonged to India completely, both the sides had their moments but India had the bulk of them and that is what has handed them victory. The Indian bowlers bowled their hearts out but once again the age old Indian problem of not being able to skittle an opposition out came to the surface as the Lankan tail wagged to propel them to 142. The Indian batsmen failed once again and not having a specialist opening bat is going to hurt them badly in this series. The middle order was a bit shaky as well and the Indians need to do something to come out of this mess. However, one good thing is that, today the batters played Murali and Mendis much better. Sushil Kumar won Olympic Bronze for India!!!!!!

Fifty six years after wrestler Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav gave India its first ever individual Olympic medal, Sushil Kumar won an unexpected bronze in the same discipline defeating Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan in the freestyle (66 kg) event here Wednesday.
This is the second medal for India at the Beijing Olympics.
Shooter Abhinav Bindra had claimed India’s first-ever individual Olympic gold last week.

Twenty-five-year old Sushil, who went down in the opening round after getting a bye in the qualification, got through to the repechage as his conqueror Ukrainian Andriy Stadnik reached the final.
All those who lose to the ultimate finalists take part in the Repechage, which decides the two bronze medallists.
In the Repechage first round, Sushil beat Doug Schwab of US before getting the better of Belarussian Albert Batyrov in the second round to qualify for the bronze medal match.
Sushil, who finished 14th in the Athens Olympics in the 60 kg category, is the only Indian wrestler to have qualified for the Beijing event from the world championship in Azerbaijan in September.
He finished seventh there and went on to win a bronze in the Asian Championship in Korea.
In the morning, Sushil had lost to Stadnik on points after being pegged down 3-8 on technical points.
Jadhav got the bronze in the Freestyle Bantamweight class in Helsinki, 1952.
This is the first time after 1952 that India have won two medals in a particular edition of the Olympics.

Marudani (Madhushree, A R Rehman, Henry)The best song of the album. Madhusree is amazing. She has a voice which reminds me of my favorite singer Shreya Ghosal. There is a very good chance to mistake her voice for Shreya if you don’t look at the cd cover.The song has a wonderful tune packed with wonderful lyrics and the typical hymn in the background used by Rehman adds to the ambience.The song is free flowing and is sure to top the charts. Rehman does not provide a lot of support on the vocal side but packs the punch on the creative side. There is ample scope to perform magic on the screen . Hopefully the choreographer has utilized the opportunity effectively.

I miss you da (Chinmayi, Indai Haza)A rhythmic song with very interesting orchestration. Chinmayi tries her best to create an impression but the song does not provide her a lot of depth to express her talent. The orchestration stands out but the song is forgettable.
Chinnama(Benny Dayal, Chinmayi)This is the Tamil version of the Hindi song with the same name. Rehman has changed the orchestration to be more western even though the folk beats appear at regular intervals throughout the song. Benny Dayal has tried his hand with a fast paced song after the slow songs in Subramanyapuram. Chinmayi does a fabulous job as well. I liked the Hindi version better.
Elai(Krish ,Naresh Iyer)Rehman is back with his magic guitar ! . The orchestration is very interesting . The flute and the violin have been used very effectively . There is a country feel to the song . The violin piece reminds me of Vanessa me and Bond. This is a light hearted song is very similar to Roobaro from Rang De Basanti and will be be a big hit with youngsters.
Naan Epoudhu(Reena Bharadwaj)Another slow song sung by Reena Bharadwaj. This is also a copy of a song from the Hindi movie Meenaxi. Reena has sung the song to the best of her abilities but like the previous remake I liked the Hindi version better.
The songs did not appeal to me like Ada or Jaane Tu but the quality of Rehman is always a very influential factor .

The pugilists' wonderful showing has sent Indian hopes of landing more medals soaring, with the three boxers only needing to win their quarter final bouts to grab at least the bronze which is awarded to both the losing semifinalists in the sport. But all the three insist they are going to settle for nothing less than the gold, and their performance clearly proves the boast is not empty.
Just when it seemed India's medal chances had dried up after shooter Abhinav Bindra's historic feat of winning the country's first ever individual Olympic gold on Monday, the heartwarming showing of the boxers not only lifted the spirits of the few remaining members of the contingent, but also more than made up for the dismal performance in the track and field.

Vijender opened up a 2-0 lead in the first round, and by the end of the second extended it to 6-1. The Indian rained punches in the third round scoring four points to widen the gulf to 10-1.
The Thai gained a couple of points in the last round but that was not enough to stop the Indian's march to the quarterfinal. The trend for the Jitender-Doniyorov bout was set in the first 15 seconds, when the Uzbek displayed a tendency to hold and push.
But the Indian also was doing the same to avoid coming into the range of the southpaw, who is known for delivering a killer punch.
Jitender opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds with two quick points. The Uzbek, too, opened his scoring, but before the round could end Jitender landed two more clean punches to make it 4-1.
Into the second round, there were no points for either boxer for almost a minute and a quarter, before Jitender opened the scoring for the round with a upper cut. That was the sole point of the second round at the end of which Jitender was 5-1 up.
In the third round, Jitender worked himself into an excellent position at 11-4, despite the Uzbek taking two points in the last five seconds.Jitender had a cut on the chin in the third round, but fought on oblivious of any discomfort.
In the last round, the Indian was careful to stay away from the southpaw's range, and with a minute to go he was 12-6 up. He continued to dance around and virtually got the Uzbek to come in and managed yet another point to make it 13-6 and earn a place in the quarterfinals.
Jitender later said: "He (Doniyorov) was also fighting with a good footwork. Although I was enjoying the lead, there was some problem when I was told by my coaches that I have received a cut on my chin. It was a bit of problem. But finally I won."
In the showpiece track and field, Indian competitors once again failed miserably, and were even unable to come near the feats they had achieved to earn the Olympic berth in the first place. As a result, discus thrower, Vikas Gowda and quarter-miler Mandeep Kaur, were both eliminated in the qualification rounds itself.
Gowda, 2005 Asian Championship silver medallist, came to the Games with a personal best of 64.96 metres, but managed only 60.69m and finished 11th in the Group B and 22nd overall to finish his Olympic campaign.
Mandeep Kaur, who has been credited with 51.74s at the Madurai Nationals, was more than a second slower in 52.88s and finished sixth in the seven-runner heat. Mandeep was 33rd overall in the field of 50 runners.
The three heptathletes - G.G.Pramila, J.J. Shobha and Susmita Singha Roy - also finished way behind.

It will be 19 years of cricket for Sri Lankan batting stalwart Sanath Jayasuriya in December. At 39, his contemporaries are long gone but Jayasuriya -- still feared by bowlers world over -- is as passionate about the game as a fledgling. The opener says it is the pride to represent his country that keeps him going.
"When I was growing up, I only wanted to do one thing and that was to play for my country. I have come a long way since playing my first game, which was at the MCG, of all places. I have had the honour of captaining my country and I just can't think of a life without cricket," Jayasuriya said."A lot of people ask me for how long I will continue. I say I don't know. It all depends on my fitness and whether I am still good enough to play for Sri Lanka. The day I feel I haven't got it any more in me I will quit."After hanging his gloves in the longer version of the game in December last year, Jayasuriya made his last Test match a memorable one by hammering six successive boundaries in an over of James Anderson as he scored a thrilling 78 in the last innings.

Kumble blames middle order

After suffering an eight-wicket thrashing by Sri Lanka in the third and final Test, Indian skipper Anil Kumble Monday said it was their inconsistency and failure of the middle order to put up a big score on a good wicket that cost them the match and the series.

"The batsmen did not put up a good show here and that probably cost us the series. It was critical that the middle order got runs and there was not enough consistency from any of the batters, and that probably what cost us the game and the Test match here," Kumble said.
Kumble said it was a good toss to win but the batsmen failed to capitalise on the early starts. "Having won the toss it was important to get a big score. We got a good start but could not capitalise. For a new batsman to go straightway and face two spinners, it is never easy. If they had converted the early starts, it would have been a different story. Overall, we did not play quality cricket to win the series," he said.

Although dejected with the batting display, Kumble however, had some words of praise for the bowlers. "Bowlers put their hearts out. Ishant showed brilliant performance throughout the series. Zaheer showed lot of character. Harbhajan was fantastic to come back from all that he had been through during the last couple of months," he said.

With as many as three players sustaining injuries in the match and Kumble admitted he had never witnessed so many injuries within a day.

Udayanidhi Stalin’s home banner Red Giant Movies has a casting coup- Surya and Nayanthara coming together for the first time in an untitled film to be directed by K.S Ravi Kumar.
It is going to be Udayanidhi Stalin's second venture after Kuruvi. The shoot will start some time in December, after Surya completes Ayan and Nayanthara finishes her current assignments, Aegan and Villu.
Nayanthara had done a brief appearance in Surya’s Ghajani in which Asin was the heroine. K.S Ravi Kumar was trying to bring them together, and now it has become a reality.
Ravi Kumar will complete Jaggu Bhai, by October end, and then start work on the new film, which is likely to have music by A.R Rahman. The other things are being worked out as the film is likely to be a summer 2009 release

Indian cricket legend SACHIN TENDULKAR is set to become a Bollywood star - he'll make his movie debut with a cameo role in a new film.Tendulkar will play himself in Vighnaharta Shri Siddhivinayak.Producer Rajiv Sanghvi says, "He will play a small role, as himself, either in a song sequence or in an actual scene."Tendulkar has offered to take part in the film for free.The film will start shooting next month, and will also feature Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is making his Bollywood debut with a cameo. He will be seen in a movie devoted to Shri Siddhivinayak. Sachin is a true devotee of Sri Ganesha and when he was approached for the role, he readily agreed. The film will be produced by Siddhivinayak Temple Trust and the production will be headed by Rajiv Sanghvi.

Tendulkar has given his words and he would start shooting for the film soon he returns from the Sri Lankan tour. What is Nuclear deal?

The Lok Sabha’s vote of confidence in Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Government last week is a decisive vote for both nuclear power as India’s key energy option and a strategic alliance with the United States of America (USA).
There is also a rising confidence among the world’s major nuclear and industrial nations that India is a responsible nuclear power. Many of these countries had shut their doors on India in 1974 when it tested a peaceful nuclear device. These restrictions became even more stringent when India declared herself a nuclear weapons state following the second Pokharan explosion in 1998.

The Act
The cornerstone of this new era in civilian nuclear co-operation is the 2007 agreement between India and the U.S., called the “123 Act”. Once the U.S. Congress approves this Act, it will allow the sale of U.S. nuclear technology and fuel to India. However the U.S. must also receive clearance from the 45 countries that comprise the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) for its nuclear exports to India.
This is because New Delhi is not a signatory to the international agreement to prevent the spread of dangerous nuclear material, namely the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Once the NSG exempts the U.S. from this rule, other countries will also demand similar concessions for exports to India.
In this context the new agreement would pave the way for large imports of uranium, the fissile fuel necessary to operate reactors, to produce nuclear power. Currently, the share of nuclear power in India’s overall electricity production is only about three per cent. This proportion is expected to rise as nuclear energy is considered a ’clean source of energy’ compared to conventional fuels which are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

Don’t bat an eyelid -- The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger probably didn’t care too much about death. Maybe because he knew he was going to be immortalised as one of the best onscreen villains of all time. Maybe he also knew that the world, at some subconscious level, loved and related to Joker more than Batman.
Because, like Joker observes: “You see, insanity is a lot like gravity. All it needs is a little… push.” At some level, Joker as “the agent of chaos” is the alter-ego of the common man stifled by the system.
What makes Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger’s Joker so scary is they make you realise this psychopath actually resides in that darkest corner of your heart. Never has a comic book character become someone so real that it could easily be YOU… if put in a situation and asked to make a difficult choice: Like the people of Gotham are asked to, towards the end.
Sacrificing the back-story of Joker’s origin was probably just what Nolan needed to make Joker that enigmatic villain who people, including Batman himself, do not fully understand.
The Dark Knight is Joker’s movie all the way (watch the cinema hall erupt with applause for every single punch line) and Batman just happens to be in it just to remind us that someone’s got to clean up the streets (Batman gets his due too and earns the applause as a matter of right, taking on an adversary as clever and dangerous as the Joker).
Christopher Nolan makes Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman (arguably the best Batman film before Nolan took his shot) look like child’s play. Why does Burton’s version seem so amateur now? It was awesome when we watched it as kids. Heath Ledger makes Jack Nicholson’s Joker look like a circus clown. Also, Bale’s certainly a better Batman than Keaton for his ability to play Batman as well as he plays Bruce Wayne. Here’s why The Dark Knight may be the best superhero movie ever.
To begin with, the near-flawless ensemble cast — apart from the phenomenally talented Heath Ledger and the charming Bale, there’s Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal (doing OK replacing Katie Holmes), Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) with author-backed roles.
Second, though it derives its characters from comics with two-dimensional depth and simplified differentiation of good and evil, Christopher and his brother Jonathan Nolan have fleshed out these characters to an extent that none of them are monotone. They are all complex characters with relatable issues — the superhero just wants to retire and spend time with the girl he loves, the girl herself may just move on with her life, the psychopath does not want to be the only freak in town, the honest guy is unable to deal with the price he’s had to pay to be good (a nice contrast between Harvey Dent and Gordon when people they love are in trouble) and even the loyalists do not approve of all things the superhero does.
Third, the man who was consumed by the dark side of Joker. Heath Ledger plays the role of his lifetime. If Nicholson’s Joker was all cheese, Heath’s is chalk (yeah, we’re talking about the minimalist make-up too). At no point do you see Heath, it’s always Joker.
Apparently, Heath improvised quite a bit (especially the part where he starts clapping sarcastically in jail) and absolutely seems to relish the part with his drawling dialogue delivery, smacking his lips at his shot at immortality. He’s lived the role, keeping Joker larger than life yet believably relatable. This is something that could’ve easily gone so over the top, the Nicholson way.
Four, the mix between dialogue and action choreography. There’s enough in there for hardcore action buffs and also plenty for those who like their movies layered and deep. It’s not sitting pretty right on top of IMDB’s top 250 (with a 9.5 rating with over a lakh votes) for nothing. In the coming months, it would be interesting to see how it fares with The Godfather considered to be the best movie of all time (currently at No. 2 with a 9.1 rating with almost three lakh votes).
We could go on talking about it but we need a book. Go watch it, again and again and again.

Half of 'Kuselan' tickets exclusive to Rajini Fans

Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' will grace theaters on the 1st of August and tremendous fanfare is expected from diehard Rajini fans and the general public.
The latest news however is that fifty percent of tickets would be made exclusive only to Rajini fans. The president of the Rajinikanth Fans' Association, Sathyanarayana made it very clear that only fifty percent of tickets would be sold at the theaters that screen 'Kuselan' in the initial weeks.. The rest would be distributed to members of the Rajinikanth Fans' Association.
When 'Kuselan' was announced, Rajinikanth had reportedly said he will just appear in as many sequences as Mammootty had featured in the original Malayalam film 'Katha Parayumbol'. That is somewhere around 18 minutes in a film whose total duration is144 minutes. That's about fifteen percent of screen time.
But then, when 'Kuselan' entered its production stage, the entire plans have changed and the screenplay was altered in such a way that the superstar's screen time would be much higher. This is what probably happens when a big star fits into a small story.
As per latest reports, Rajinikanth is appearing in three out of the five songs in the film and will take equal share on screen with Pasupathy who plays the role of the poor barber, played in the original by Sreenivasan.
P Vasu, the director of 'Kuselan', has taken special care to present the superstar as being young and vibrant. The director had no inhibitions when he announced that the film would be an out and out Rajinikanth film.
The movie is distributed by Pyramid Saimira. In Kerala , the movie is released by Seven Arts International, who incidentally is also a co producer of the film.
'Kuselan' will grace 80 centers in Kerala.

Kollywood has seen it all. Films based on the protagonist’s fixation for a star doesn’t sound unusual. But Kuselan seems to make news everyday. Naturally, because the film star happens to be superstar Rajnikant and the film maker is none other than P. Vasu, the man who gave Kollywood’s mega hit in recent times — Chandramukhi.
Vasu, who was actually working on the script of Chandramukhi 2 before Kuselan happened, unwinds between hectic schedules to talk about the film. “Yes, following the success of Chandramukhi, I was scripting its sequel. Even Rajnikant had heard the outline of the story and given the green signal. When things were beginning to fall in place, Natarajan, an associate director in Malayalam cinema, suggested I watch the film Katha Parayumpol, a runaway hit in Kerala. The film revolved around a barber’s fascination for film star Mammootty. The minute I saw it, I imagined our own superstar in a film like that. The climax made a deep impact on me. I’ve never come across such a story,” smiles Vasu.
So the next thing the ace director did was call up Rajnikant and ask him to watch Katha Parayumpol. “The superstar watched the film, but left without a comment. I was puzzled. But the call came the following day. He told me how much the film had impacted him and evinced interest in it. We met and discussed the nitty-gritty. But having said yes to Robot, he wondered how he would be able to juggle two films at a time. I assured him I would wrap up his portion real fast. He agreed — mainly because the film had affected him so deeply.”Rajni as Rajni
Vasu, who can’t stop gushing about the superstar continues, “It was Rajni who suggested that K. Balachander, his mentor, watch the film so that his production house Kavithalaya could take it up. Balachander felt the story had a striking semblance to that of the superstar and insisted Rajni play himself in the film. That’s how things began to roll with Pushpa Kandasmy as producer. It’s set for release on July 31.”
The Telugu version, Kathanayakudu, will have Jagapathi Babu playing the barber. “In Tamil we zeroed in on Pasupathi. Rajni was impressed by his performance in Veyil. We wanted someone who has not seen the superstar in person or acted with him. Vadivelu plays a meaty role, and so does Meena (she appears in the Tamil and Telugu versions). Rajni’s heroine in the film is none other than Nayanthara.”
Regarding the speculation relating to the number of scenes in which Rajni makes an appearance, Vasu says, “It’s a role that will be remembered. And it’s not merely a guest appearance. We have seen bits and pieces of ‘Rajni as Rajni’ in Valli and Anbulla Rajnikant. I personally feel the scene count doesn’t matter. What matters is the impact a character makes and the message he/she conveys. And that’s where Kuselan scores. What sets it apart from such star-centric films is the treatment.”
Talking about the ‘Cinema Cinema’ number, one of the highlights of the film, Vasu explains, “The number will be a sure-fire hit. It features the icon in 10 stylish looks. Portions of the song were shot with real fans at the Shanti theatre. If you remember, A. R. Rahman’s first film was Roja, a Kavithalaya production; now Kuselan has music by the maestro’s nephew G.V. Prakash.”
When asked whether it would be a ‘superstar versus superstar’ situation with Priyadarshan planning to remake Katha Parayumpol in Hindi with Shah Rukh Khan, Vasu smiles, “Each is great in his own way. They have distinct styles and a major following. But much depends on the treatment of the script.”
Switching to a mellow mood, the director says, “Eight years after I did Uzhaipali with Rajni, Chandramukhi happened. Soon, Kuselan followed. I wish to do more films with him. But as you know, man proposes, God disposes. So let’s wait and see.”

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has expelled Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party. Legally, Somnath Chatterjee can continue as Speaker. Only Parliament can remove him from the post.A strict action was expected against him for defying the party over the trust vote. The Speaker stayed non-partisan against the wishes of CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, who wanted all his party members to go a whole a hog against the proposed Indo-US civil nuclear deal.Refusing to succumb to pressure, Chatterjee presided over the trust vote and even had an exchange with some members of his party on the floor of the House.The CPM Politburo is now meeting to decide what action will be taken. The CPM is likely to take strict disciplinary action against Somnath Chatterjee, which can even be expulsion from the primary membership of the party.

NEW DELHI: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) on Tuesday won the trust vote in the Lok Sabha by a margin of 19 votes after a two-day debate, often marked by acrimony and allegations. The ruling coalition secured 275 votes as against 256 by the Opposition. As many as 10 members were absent or abstained from voting.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the outcome as “a convincing victory” for the UPA government, the Congress and the supporting parties. “This will send a message to the world at large that India is prepared to take its rightful place in the comity of nations,” Dr. Singh told journalists after he emerged from the Parliament House.
“I thank all leaders of UPA, supporting parties, all Congress men and women who have worked unitedly with single-minded pursuit for this impressive victory,” he said.
On the other hand, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described it as “corrupt victory” and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat said that it was a “sad day” for democracy.
Bahujan Samaj Party leader and U.P. Chief Minister Mayawati blamed the BJP for the UPA’s victory. “It is not a victory of the UPA but the result of the politics by the UPA and the NDA,” she asserted.
The Prime Minister could not give his reply in the House at the end of the debate as BJP members constantly chanted slogans, demanding his resignation in the wake of allegations of bribery. The proceedings were curtailed after the BJP members made dramatic allegations of some of them were bribed, and produced wads of currency notes in the House to support their case.
Asked for his comments on the sensational disclosures, Dr. Singh told journalists that the matter was with the Speaker and “we will cooperate with him” in taking necessary action in accordance with the provisions of law. “These developments have made me sad,” he added.
When the House reassembled at 6.30 p.m. after a series of adjournments, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee allowed smaller parties to make their brief interventions but these were drowned in the bouts of sloganeering and chants by the BJP members.
Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Muslimeen and Omar Abdullah of the National Conference could hardly be heard. Mr. Abdullah said there was no distinction between Muslims and Indians. The “real enemies are not nuclear deals like these but poverty, hunger, unemployment and lack of development,” the NC leader, who was Minister in the NDA regime said. He also referred to the Amarnath Yatra controversy and asserted that the pilgrimage, continuing for the past century, would continue as long as Kashmiris and Muslims remained in Srinagar and the Valley.
Other speakers from the smaller parties included Ranjeeta Ranjan of the Lok Jan Shakti Party, Hemlal Murmu of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, M.P. Veerendra Kumar of the JD(S), and Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Democratic Party.
As the Prime Minister was not allowed to give his reply, it was laid on the table of the House and the Speaker moved on to the voting on the trust motion. Within seconds, the electronic score board displayed 253 votes in favour of the UPA government, 232 against it and two abstentions. Though the Speaker announced the result nearly an hour after that, Congress members and allies were seen walking up to the Prime Minister and congratulating him and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

NEW DELHI: The changed and new political equations were reflected during the first day of the historic trust vote debate in the Lok Sabha on Monday even as the “numbers” for the ruling United Progressive Alliance remained only precariously comfortable. There were no surprises with speakers sticking to their party positions.
The trust vote will be taken up on Tuesday.
The debate began with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh moving the motion “that this House expresses confidence in the Council of Ministers.” Seeking the trust vote, he expressed “regret” at the “wholly avoidable” situation but welcomed the opportunity for the House to review his administration. Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was in the Chair for most of the day.
A spirited performance by External Affairs Minister and Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee, a political indictment of the government’s record by Leader of the Opposition L. K. Advani and a competent critique of the UPA’s pro-U.S. approach by Mohammad Salim (CPI-M) were the highlights of an otherwise indifferent debate.
At the outset, Dr. Singh said the UPA was able to complete four years in office because of the “leadership” of chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the “wise and visionary leaderships of Jyoti Basu, Harkishan Singh Surjeet and M. Karunanidhi.”
Referring to his “solemn assurance” to seek the guidance of Parliament before operationalising the India-U.S. nuclear deal, he sought the support of the House on the basis of “our entire record in office.”With these remarks, Dr. Singh left it to Mr. Mukherjee to open the government’s defence against Mr. Advani and Mr. Salim’s charge.

LEEDS: An extraordinary 10th-wicket stand by young Stuart Broad and the shock choice England fast bowler Darren Pattinson forced South Africa to bat again — against all the odds — in the second Test at Headingley. They put on 61, beating a 56-year-old record for the last wicket.
The South African pace bowlers took all the second innings wickets . . . until Broad, without pressure but showing what an enormous future he has, led the way to a second innings total of 327.
That meant South Africa needed just nine to win with a day to spare, and reached its target in only seven balls to win by 10 wickets.
Despite his gallant innings, England will replace Broad who has bowled as if he must be tired and is carrying a foot injury.
Comfortable start
The fourth day had begun blissfully enough for England, which had a target of 320 to make South Africa bat again; Alastair Cook seemed to be in complete control as much as Ashwell Prince and de Villiers had been the previous day, and on a docile pitch the nightwatchman James Anderson batted 90 minutes.
The last 12 of those minutes undid all the good work he had put together in the third-wicket partnership of 59 with Cook. Two short-pitched balls from Dale Steyn did the damage.
The first hit him on the forearm and required attention from two of the England backroom staff. They had hardly reached the boundary rope when Steyn bowled a second ball that crashed into the side of the ducking Anderson’s helmet and sent him to his knees.
Not surprisingly, he was out in the next over to a well-pitched up ball from Steyn that trapped him lbw and made England 109 for three. At lunch, England was 130 for four and everything depended on Cook, who had not made an error, and Ian Bell, fresh from his Lord’s 199. Both were out in the course of five overs. Flintoff batted cautiously and Ambrose, needing runs for his place, stayed together until tea at 182 for six. The pair batted with greater freedom afterwards, but Ambrose became Boucher’s ninth victim. Flintoff was caught by Kallis at slip, so ending all the speculation about his ability to copy the Ian Botham heroics of 1981.

Answer:

There are many ways in solving this problem without equation.
Here is one way:

In five minutes the covers ¼ of the way and the father 1/6 i.e ¼ - 1/6 = 1/12 less than the son.
Since the father was 1/6 of the way ahead of the son, the son would catch up with him after 1/6:4/12 = 2 five minutes intervals, or 10 minutes.

There is one other way of doing this calculation, which is even simpler:
To get to work the father needs 10 minutes more than the son. If he were to leave home 10 minutes earlier, they would both arrive at work at the same time. If the father were to leave only five minutes earlier, the son would overhaul him half way to work i.e. 10 minutes later, since it takes him 20minutes to cover the whole distance.

You are now in an interesting phase of your life. You have just entered Class XI. These are days when you feel elated that you have switched over to a higher level of learning. The excitement is fine. But along with that you should have a strong determination to excel in your academic work. This indeed is a crucial phase. There are three significant crossroads in the academic life of a person — after the 10th, after the 12th and after the bachelor’s degree. Out of these, the most important turning point is after the 12th. You are heading for that crossroad. You may turn your academic life one way or the other after the 12th.
How you plan to meet that decisive moment? Intelligent planning and effective execution are essential for success in any activity. What are the areas you should focus on when you are on the threshold of Plus-One or Plus-Two studies?
Goal setting
You should have a dream, a goal. In fact, you should have several goals. There should be short-term goals at different stages to reach your long-range goal. Your dream may be to become a thoracic surgeon, lawyer, cinematographer, architect, electronics engineer, journalist, or a great farmer. Right from now, every move should keep the final goal in view.
Concentration
Hold a matchstick in the hot sun on a bright day for a few minutes. Nothing special happens. Now hold it against the sun so that the firing tip is in the focus of a convex lens. In a few seconds the matchstick gets ignited. This is because the thermal rays falling on the lens are focused on the tip. The human mind is similar. If you do a thing with full concentration, you can achieve much. If your mind wanders, you achieve little even if you work for a longer period. Study with full concentration.
When you prepare for an examination, you should have three basic tools — the syllabi, standard textbooks and question papers of the previous examinations. It is a good idea to read the text in advance and go to the classroom, where you would get your doubts cleared by the teacher’s lecture or subsequent interaction.
Timetable
Prepare a personal timetable in the beginning of the year. Earmark more time for subjects you feel are relatively difficult. Make the timetable workable. Arrange the different subjects properly. Provide brief breaks. The study hours should suit your personal preference. Draw up separate timetables for working days and holidays.
Allow time for recreation, general reading, and household duties. Revise the timetable every month, in tune with practical requirements. Make a monthly plan, and an annual schedule.
It is not the duration of time that decides the efficiency of your learning. If you adopt efficient methods of learning, you can achieve more in less time. In other words, you should develop good study habits.
Numerical problems
Suppose you want to study how to solve a certain type of numerical problem. If you just read it from a textbook, the worked-example will give you an impression that the solution is very easy. But when you try to solve a similar problem independently on a later occasion, you may get held up. Try to solve the problem without reference to the textbook. If you get held up at some stage, go back to the book and get your doubts clarified.
Sketches
Studying subjects such as science and technology involve the use of several sketches while explaining ideas and concepts. You have to remember such sketches and draw them in the answer books during the examination. A sketch that appears to be simple may prove to be too tough to be drawn from memory. So you have to practise drawing them, initially by referring to the text and later on independently.
Do not think too much on the time when you should start all these. Never keep for tomorrow what you can do today. There is a fine formula that will help us on most occasions: do it now.
Right style of reading
You need not read aloud, except for correcting pronunciation or appreciating poetry. Practice silent reading; you can adjust the reading speed to suit the topic. If it is easy, you can read fast. Do not move your tongue and lips. Do not read word by word. Do not go for finger-pointing or head swinging. After reading a passage, see whether, you can recall what you read. Write out the points you have gathered. See whether you can describe in your own words what you read. Try to improve your reading speed, without sacrificing comprehension.
Dictionary habit
When you do not know the meaning of a word, refer a dictionary; do not ask someone to tell you the meaning. It is a good idea to use a learners’ dictionary that provides short illustrative sentences to bring out the usage of words. Practise right pronunciation of words.
Mnemonics
What is mnemonics? You know that VIBGYOR tells you the seven colours of the sunlight in the right order. This is a mnemonic. You can make your own mnemonics when you have to remember various points in a specific order.
Make it a habit to note down the important points mentioned by the teacher in the classroom. You need not write the note in full sentences. Keep eye contact with the teacher in the classroom.
Descriptive questions
When you learn essays, do it with full concentration. Write out the points, and if necessary make a mnemonic to remember the points in the right sequence. Try to write out some of the essays, as if you were in the examination hall. Even in the examination, there is no harm in writing the points first and then expanding each point to form the essay. Use simple language and short sentences. Draw sketches wherever possible. While solving numerical problems, write out the relevant steps. If you get held up with a problem, leave that, go to other questions and answer them, then go back and try the unfinished problem.
Entrance examination
Those who prepare for entrance examinations know that the content of the board examination and the entrance tests are the same, but the question styles are different. Entrance tests use objective type questions, usually of the multiple choice variety. Make the studies for the board examination and the entrance tests complementary – one helping the other.
Try to answer both the board examination questions and the entrance style objective questions, as if you were in the examination hall. Analyse your mistakes, if any, during the rehearsals and avoid them in future.
Enjoy examinations
Never get nervous in the examination hall. Keep yourself calm and composed. If you have prepared well, there is no room for anxiety. Plan your work and work your plan. Keep your self-confidence at its peak. Success is yours.

Tendulkar honoured with best Asian ODI batsman award by ACC

Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar [Images] was named the best Asian one-day batsman at the inaugural Asian cricket Council (ACC) awards ceremony in Karachi last night.
Tendulkar, who is recovering from a groin injury, could not make it to the ceremony and India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images] collected the award on his behalf.
Three Sri Lankans walked away with top awards with wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara receiving the best Asian Test batsman award while country-mates Muttiah Muralitharan and Farveez Maharoof named the best Asian Test and ODI bowlers respectively.
Former India and Pakistan captains Sunil Gavaskar [Images] and Imran Khan [Images] were also honoured with special awards named "legendary cricketers" of both countries.
The ACC also gave away a special award of "best administrator" to Colonel (retd) Nur Khan, former President of the Pakistan Cricket Board, who played a significant role in forming the ACC.
The septuagenarian Nur Khan who took his award from former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga got a standing ovation from the gathering at the ceremony.
Khan, who had also remained President of Pakistan Hockey and Squash Federations, is credited of playing a big role in promoting Pakistan and Indian cricket at the world level and also producing a lineage of great sportsmen.
PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf, who took over as ACC President, said the awards were meant to honour and recognise the outstanding performers of the continent.
"Our sportsmen need to be recognised and rewarded for their achievements specially when Asia has now become a powerhouse in world cricket," he said

Ajantha Mendis broke India's back with a mesmerising six-wicket haul as Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup cricket tournament with a facile 100-run victory in Karachi on Sunday night.
Chasing 274, India's much-vaunted batting attack was bamboozled by Mendis' bag of tricks and the mystery spinner emerged as the wrecker-in-chief to bundle out India for 173 in just 39.3 overs.
Mendis' bowling figures read an impressive 8-1-13-6 and this was the first six-wicket haul in the Asia Cup history.
India's ploy of having an additional batsman did not pay dividend and only Virender Sehwag (60 off 36) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (49) managed to salvage their reputation.
The Indian batsmen thus let down their bowling colleagues, who had earlier done a decent job by bowling out Sri Lanka for 273 in 49.5 overs, a total built around Sanath Jayasuriya's 125-run knock off just 114 balls.
Chaminda Vaas started the rot by removing Gautam Gambhir (6) in the fifth over before Mendis took over.
In his first over, Mendis foxed an onrushing Sehwag with a 'flicker' to get him stumped and two balls later, he flicked another through Yuvraj gates to castle him for a duck.
In his third over, Mendis disturbed Suresh Raina's (16) timbers before trapping Rohit Sharma (3) plumb in front four runs later. In the 32nd over again, he scalped Irfan Pathan and RP Singh off success deliveries to complete his six-wicket haul.
Earlier, Jayasuriya looked unstoppable in a brilliant 125 runs from 114 balls that included nine fours and five sixes as he put on a face-saving 131 runs stand for the fifth wicket with Tillekaratne Dilshan who made 56.
India started well as Ishant Sharma rocked the top order with three wickets while RP Singh cleaned up the tail with as many as Sri Lanka struggled to make 57 in the last 10 overs.
Jayasuriya's 27th career hundred rescued Sri Lanka from a precarious 66 for four in 12 overs after India, in a brave decision, opted to field first.
RP Singh suffered badly in the 16th over when a blitz from Jayasuriya produced 26 runs from six balls taking him from 61 to 87.
He blasted Singh over the long off area for two sixes and then drove him for two fours over covers with the final ball being dispatched over mid-wicket for another six.
His partnership with Dilshan, who made his fifty from 68 balls, came at a time when the Lankans were rattled by Sharma.
After Kumar Sangakkara was run out for just four in the second over after a tragic mix-up with Jayasuriya, Sharma struck thrice.
He had Mahela Jayawardene (11) caught at point cutting straight to Rohit Sharma and then in his sixth over, he first had Chamara Kapugedera (5) caught off a miscued pull shot and bowled Chamara Silva for a first ball duck.
India fought back through their spinners Pragyan Ojha, Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag and so tight were the Indians in their bowling and fielding that despite Jayasuriya's hundred, Sri Lanka were not able to get a boundary between the 22nd and 40th over.

The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2008) rank list will be released on June 25, sources at the Anna University, Guindy said. They added that the single window counselling for the academic stream candidates for admissions to U.G courses offered at the Anna University, Government and aided engineering colleges and the government quota seats in the self-financing engineering colleges will begin on July 11.And till now, 1,38,855 students have purchased the Anna University application forms for the engineering admission. Just 5 days before releasing the rank list, the Anna University, Guindy authorities will assign random numbers to all the applications submitted by candidates to determine the seniority list in case of a tie. The random number will be used to break the tie if more than one candidate had scored the same cut-off and shared the same date of birth. After the rank list is published, the counselling for students applying under the sports quota will begin on July 3. The counselling for vocational stream candidates will be conducted from July 4 to 8. The following day counselling will be held for candidates from states other than Tamil Nadu. Younis century takes Pakistan to win over India

Younis Khan struck his first One-day international century on home soil on Wednesday to take Pakistan to a eight-wicket win over India in a high-scoring Asia Cup super league match at the National Stadium.
Younis's undefeated 123, his fifth One-day century in 174 matches, gave Pakistan their fifth victory while chasing 300 or more runs for victory and revived their fading hopes of a place in the final.
Pakistan reached their victory target of 309 for the loss of only two wickets with 4.3 overs to spare after India had compiled 308 for seven from their 50 overs.
If Sri Lanka beat India on Thursday, Pakistan have to defeat Bangladesh in the final league match by a big margin to play in the final. Sri Lanka have already qualified.
Younis shared partnerships of 56 with Nasir Jamshed (53), who retired hurt with cramps, and an undefeated 144 from 123 balls with captain Misbah-ul-Haq (70 not out).
Younis also passed 5,000 international One-day runs in his innings of 117 balls which contained 11 fours and one six.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (76) and Rohit Sharma (58) provided the basis for India's competitive total. Dhoni, who came into bat in the 13th over, was out in the penultimate over after hitting four boundaries from 96 balls.
India scored 77 in the final 10 overs with Irfan Pathan hitting an unbeaten 38.

Dhoni lambasts Asia Cup schedule

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday lambasted the gruelling schedule of the Asia Cup after his side swamped Bangladesh by seven wickets to record their third successive win in the competition in Karachi.
"We have spent 36 hours playing cricket out of the 84 hours we have been in Karachi. It is too tight. I am not happy with the schedule. Two teams have to play back to back matches while two have got a day off," he said.
Dhoni said his players are really tired after the matches and he is happy they would now get a couple of days off.
"It was tough out there for us. But I am happy we have kept going. Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag have batted really well in the tournament and I hope they keep on doing the same," he said.

Dhoni, however, made it clear that despite the big wins his team would guard against complacency and not get over confident.
"The other teams can't be written off and they can still come back so we have to be careful and we have to continue to play like this," he added.
Dhoni also lauded Alok Kapali's century (115) that helped Bangladesh post a respectable total of 283.
"He is an international player and one expects this from an international player. I think he exploited the situation and pitch well and he picked the right areas to hit."
Dhoni said the pitch had got easier for batting although he is expecting it to become slower.
"We would like to bat first if we start winning tosses," he said.
Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful conceded that after posting a good score the fielders had failed to support the bowlers.
"The bowlers bowled well on an easy pitch but fielding was not supportive. We dropped catches and maybe if they had been taken it could have been different," he said.

Victorious skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said 300 was not enough to defend on the National Stadium's benign track and he was not much surprised as his side knocked down the target set by Pakistan with 7.5 overs to spare.
Pakistan rode on captain Shoaib Malik's 125 to set India 300 but Dhoni's team made the chase look like a stroll in the park and cruised to 301 four 4 in 42.1 overs. Dhoni said Pakistan probably fell 40-50 runs short.

"I always knew that a target of 300 here was always chaseable. The track was fantastic, one of the best in Pakistan. All we needed was a good start...maybe 340-350 would have been the right score. Besides, they lost Umar Gul (who bowled only 1.2 overs before leaving the field with rib muscle injury) and it was hard luck for Shoaib," Dhoni said.
Though a final berth is no more a worry for the side, Dhoni insisted he wanted to win all the games.

"We have to win all our matches for we want to carry the momentum to the final. I'm happy with the bowlers' performance, while the batsmen are also on song. We did drop a couple of catches but it happens at times," he said
Dhoni's Pakistani counterpart Shoaib Malik was quite upset and he rued Umar Gul's injury which took the sting off the hosts' attack.
"I thought 299 was a good total but when you lose your key bowler, it's always very difficult to come back. And with (Virender) Sehwag and (Suresh) Raina on song, we just could not stop them. They just kept going on and on," he lamented

Hey guys! Just came back home after watching the Kamal's Magnum opusDasavatharam movie. Please don't miss the first 15 minutes of the movie.That is the best portion among the whole package i can say.The story line starts with the clash between vaishnavas and shivas. it is an incident that took place in the 12th century during the period of kulothunga chozha. Here comes the charcter 'Nambi'. No other avatar of kamal has impressed as nambi did. The set looks real. It will sure drive the audience to the ancient age itself. Hats off to cinematographer Ravivarman. 'kallai mattum kandal' song with such visual effect is really awesome.The rest of the story line revolves around how the scientist kamal 'govind' invent a dreadful element, later realizing its consequence trying to destroy it but the American govt not granting him the permission. So he escapes from the laboratory with his invention but the white American Fletcher tip toed him all the way. The element was parceled to an incorrect address in india. An old hag ( very much similar to 'avvai shanmugi' kamal) receives that parcel unknowingly she puts that element into a Vishnu idol. How govind kamal along with asin recapturing that parcel and destroying it ? How fletcher kamal induces problem to the scientist? Like that story revolves. Other avatars of kamal just come and go and are of not much importance and not that effective.George W. bush character is cool i think that is the only character that had good make up cast. Tsunami at the climax is also a fantastic and clever work, interesting to watch.First time Asin plays a dual role in the movie. She comes as a grand daughter to the old hag and also as the wife of 'Nambi' character. Mallika sherawat is really hot, she comes as a translator to the villan kamal. Napolean as Kulothunga chozha is really an artistic performance. Jaya pradha comes as the wife of punjabi kamal. Back ground music by Devi sriprasad is descent enough to have some feel. Among the songs 'Mukutha Mukuntha' is melodious and humming. Final song 'ulaganayagane' (all 10 avatars appears in this song) scores good beat.Overall i can say it's a good movie to watch. But something is missing in the movie. I wonder how kamal included lots of masala ingredients in his movie. Rare to see such things in kamal's film. But may be the high budget would have made him to do so. An usual story line with much hype . But this movie is surely a mega hit. I would give 9 out of 10 marks for "DASAVATHARAM".

Why Pulijanmam won a National Award:

Malayalam film director, Priyanandanan is no stranger to national awards. His debut film Neythukaran won Murali a National Award for Best Actor in 2001.
And now, the filmmaker has struck pay dirt the second time around with his second film, Pulijanmam, which won a National Award for Best Film at the 54th National awards announced on Tuesday. Murali, incidentally is the protagonist of Pulijanmam as well.

While all those Kamal Haasan fans out there have to wait till Friday [June 13] to catch the year's most awaited and hyped Tamil film, Dasavathaaram, a selected few from the Tamil film industry got a chance to watch the film at a special screening in Chennai.

Andrew Symonds fined for missing team bus:

Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds has been fined after sleeping in and missing the team bus to a training session in Barbados.
Symonds was 10 minutes late for the bus but did not miss any part of practice after finding his own way to Kensington Oval, the Australian Associated Press reported.
He was fined an undisclosed amount by the team's leadership group consisting of skipper Ricky Ponting , vice-captain Michael Clarke , coach Tim Nielsen and manager Steve Bernard.
Symonds is the second Australian player to be fined on their tour of West Indies after sleeping in. Spinner Stuart MacGill was also fined for turning up late on day two of the second Test in Antigua.
Symonds was also fined and suspended for two one-day games after arriving drunk on the morning of a one-day match against Bangladesh on the 2005 Ashes tour.

Going by current form, Bangladesh will need nigh a miracle to pull the rug from under India's feet in Thursday's tri-series match. But Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his teammates sound cautious enough not to step on the banana skin.
India certainly look every inch the tournament favourites after thumping Pakistan by 140 runs and snapping their 12-match winning spree on Tuesday night.

Indicating that the team will not lower its guard even against the minnows, Dhoni said he wants to maintain a clean slate.

"We got to win every match. In fact, it is not about winning and losing. It is all about going out there and playing to your potential and strength," he said.
"Everybody wants to win. It was a good game of cricket against Pakistan yesterday. Hopefully, rain will not interfere tomorrow," he added, almost indicating that only divine intervention can help the hosts, practically on the way out after Pakistan spanked them by 70 runs in the tri-series opener.
Dhoni though refused to underestimate Bangladesh, saying they are no pushovers.
"They have enough depth in both batting and bowling and they should not be rated by one innings, when they lost to Pakistan.
"We always look to the present. We will look to win over Bangladesh and then go in to the final, where we want to play to our potential. Then think about Asia Cup, our next tournament, and set a plan in place for a positive result," he said.
There, however, remains one worry in the Indian camp -- difficulty in sighting the soiled ball after 20 overs.
"They have used black soil on the track. The ball gets ruffed up after 20 overs. It was really difficult to sight the ball," he said.
Bangladesh's batting order has an obvious brittle look to it even though their bowlers did their best against Pakistan and shot out Shoaib Malik's team inside 40 overs.
In contrast, India appear invulnerable. The star-studded batting line-up looks rock solid and it needed half centuries from just three batsmen to post a mammoth total of 330 for eight against Pakistan.
If the Delhi duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir can put together yet another strong start, it will allow their batting colleagues play their strokes with unbridled aggression.
Among the bowlers, Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla ran through the Pakistani line-up and, in all likelihood, Bangladesh should prove easy meat for both.

Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson has already sounded the war bugle when he said that his wards would look to thump India by a bigger margin to make it 13 wins in a row.
India, severely under-strength because of pre-tournament injury woes, would be in for further trouble as opener Virender Sehwag is a doubtful starter due to high fever.

With seniors like Sachin Tendulkar recovering from a groin injury, and Harbhajan Singh, serving a ban for slapping Sreesanth during the IPL, not in the ranks, it would be anything but easy for Dhoni's young brigade against Pakistan.

The much-anticipated contest meanwhile faces a major threat from the weather. The opener itself was truncated because of intermittent drizzle and this match too could see rain interruptions.
As for the Pakistani attack, medium pacers, particularly young talent Wahab Riaz, were impressive in the win over Bangladesh. But with Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif missing from the attack, it remains to be seen how Sohail Tanvir and his bowling colleagues fare against India's star-studded line-up.

Gony replaces Sreesanth in Indian Squad:

Punjab seamer Manpreet Gony was on Saturday included in the Indian squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh after paceman S Sreesanth [Images] was ruled out due to a side strain, sustained in an Indian Premier League [Images] match.
"Due to non availability of Sreesanth, it was decided by the selection committee to send Manpreet Gony for Bangladesh tri-series," Niranjan Shah, BCCI Secretary, said in a media release.
Sreesanth doubtful
"Sreesanth was yesterday assessed by Dr. Kinja at Bangalore. He has got a left-sided external oblique strain. He would require about 2 weeks for recovering from the current situation and getting back to his normal bowling routine," the press release added.
The Punjab bowler thus becomes the third player who has been rewarded for his good performance in the recently concluded inaugural Indian Premier League.
Gony, who has played just five-first class matches, had claimed 17 wickets in 16 matches for the IPL runners-up Chennai Super Kings [Images] at an average of 26.05.
Baroda all rounder Yusuf Pathan and Hyderabad spinner Pragyan Ojha were earlier given ODI calls for the tri-series.
The Kerala [Images] pacer would now undergo a two-week rehabilitation programme and will be available for the Asia Cup, to be held in Pakistan.
"He will be available for Asia Cup 2008 to be played at Pakistan. Mr. Sreesanth rehabilitation will be organised at NCA in Bangalore," the BCCI press release said.
Meanwhile, Gony said a successful IPL stint has made him a better bowler and he was looking forward to give his best in his first national assignment.
"IPL has given me great exposure. You rarely get a chance to bowl to so many world class batsmen and this experience has made me a better bowler. (Chennai Super Kings) coach Kepler Wessels made a slight adjustment to my action, helped me hit the deck harder and bowl at right areas.
"But, I will look to have a fresh start when I bowl in the tri-series, where I will also get opportunity to bowl a longer spell which should help me show my abilities," Gony, who has played just five first class matches, told PTI.
"It is like a dream come true. It was always my dream to play for my country. When I got the call from a BCCI official today informing about my selection in the team for the tri-series, my joy knew no bounds," said the 24-year-old right-arm seamer.
The 6'4" tall cricketer from Mohali, who took 17 wickets from 16 games in the IPL, does not seem to be bothered about pressure of making India debut, though he adds "only pressure on me will be to perform well".
Gony said he was surprised when he was bought in the IPL players' auction by the Chennai Super Kings team owners.
"After an ordinary first class debut, getting the call from an IPL franchise came as a surprise. However, I feel taking eight wickets in two Deodhar Trophy matches for North Zone helped me catch the eye of the team owners.
"IPL has been a great learning experience for young cricketers like me. Though schedule was hectic, but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it," he said.
Gony praised his Chennai Super Kings skipper M S Dhoni [Images] for showing faith in him during the Twenty20 extravaganza.
"My skipper showed great faith in me. He is a real guiding force and all the players enjoyed playing under him.
In addition, (South African pacer) Makhaya Ntini [Images] used to interact with me regularly and I got the opportunity to talk to many international players which also helped me a lot," he said.
